When people think of Conservatism within the United States, the Grand Old Party comes to mind. It holds the most power when it comes to state legislatures, and is currently in control of most of the federal government with the exception of the House of Representatives. Two students from the University of Central Florida, Vanessa and Micheal, discussed with me their conservative beliefs and why they belong to the Republican Party.

Vanessa

Vanessa is from West Palm Beach, Florida. This is her second year at UCF, but credit wise she is a junior. She majors in Psychology with a minor in Entrepreneurship. …

For some people, Liberalism has been seen as a beacon of hope. For some others, it has been seen as an extreme. Another large group sees it as a system of destruction. The political ideology was originally revoluntary in many ways. Politically, it challenged the hierarchy during Medieval times. Socially, it introduced the harming principle and being anti-paternalism. Economically, it introduced capitalism. The two college students I interviewed discuss their views through this perspective.

Leftism is controversial. With its many ideologies, some people believe it is too utopian and always comes out as dystopian in nature, while for others it is attainable and the best option for humanity. Many reasons why we have progress globally are due to leftists such as Martin Luther King Jr and Gandhi. To learn more about leftism, I interviewed the University of Central Florida student, Victoria over a zoom call.

Victoria is a senior who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She and her family immigrated to Orlando when she was 2 years old. …

In this day in age, being moderate or independent because of both sides’ noise seems unheard of. However, according to the Washington Post, the number of registered independents has surpassed the number of registered Republicans ever since the start of political parties’ documentation during the early 1900s.

Vitoria is a senior born in Campinas, Brazil. She double majors in Political Science and Legal Studies.

Vitoria sees herself as socially liberal and fiscally conservative. She has no party affiliation due to not being an American citizen. However, she does identify with one party more than the other.

I identify a little bit more with Democrats and Independents than Republicans or Conservatives. …

Progressives face a dilemma when it comes to both ends of the political system. They face moderate Democrats who believe they are not showing enough support when it comes to Presidential elections. They also face Conservatives who paint them as extreme for wanting policies such as Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and free college. The Progressive movement has been growing with many popular figures such as AOC, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Elizabeth Warren, and most importantly Bernie Sanders. I interviewed University of Central Florida student, Evan, to understand his stances through his progressive point of view.

Evan is a freshman who majors in Engineering. …

With the turbulent 2020 election coming to a close, many are going through the paradox of being both worried and optimistic about the nation’s country’s future. With things becoming more polarized than ever, many feel that there are only two sides: Democrat or Republican. However, with this one student I interviewed from the University of Central Florida, he shows this is not always the case.

Daniel from Jacksonville, Florida, identifies as a Libertarian. He is a Freshman at UCF who majors in Kinesiology but is debating on changing it to Computer Science. …
